Charlotte Madar, President & Owner of Professional Travel Planners
It [L.E.A.D.] was so new at the time that I was asked to take the class. The United Way was interested in getting more people onto the non-profit boards. So, I decided, it couldn’t hurt to learning something new. I found out that there were great places in the Valley I had never been before, such as Kellogg State Park. I was amazed at what we had in the Valley!
My idea was to meet as many people as possible. You get over your fear, thinking that you could never do it. The program gives you a chance to find out what it’s all about, and it’s not so verwhelming when everyone else is like you.

Pam Mautte, Director of VSAAC
Participation in this program was very rewarding to me both personally and professionally. I enrolled while being employed as Director of VSAAC for about two years and found the program to be extremely beneficial in my new role. It really helped me acquire new skills and a framework in understanding broad community issues in addition to providing networking and an opportunity to strengthen networking skills. Upon completion of the program, I felt that I had enhanced my current leadership skills and immediately found them to be an asset in my new roles as chair of various subcommittees in the Valley and the state. In addition, I became an advisor for the Valley United Way Youth Leadership Program, President of the CT Prevention Network, held several different chair / director positions for the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club, co-chaired the Valley Council staff conference committee, the board member for the Valley Red Cross, secretary for the Valley System of Care Collaborative, and vice chair of the Valley Council of Health and Human Service Organizations. In the past two years, the Leadership program has assisted in developing my personal community service role with active involvement in my children’s elementary school.
In my current role at Birmingham Group Health Services, the leadership program has really helped me professionally. Again, the skills and knowledge gained has assisted in expanding the VSAAC region, engaging new community partners and taking on an additional leadership role as the Tobacco Champion at Birmingham Group Health Services for an extensive tobacco cessation collaborative initiative through Communicare Inc.
